Plan Description
This is a 20-week training plan to prepare you for your first time running 50 miles. The plan accounts for a moderately hilly and/or technical course. Prior to starting the plan, you should be able to run 90 minutes in a single duration, with a weekly run volume of ~3 hours.
The plan uses a mix of heart rate and RPE to help you dial in targets. Due to the unique nature of trails, pace targets are not particularly helpful. All runs are planned using time, keeping in mind that our bodies adapt to duration x intensity (which is at the heart of TSS - training stress score). Some of the earlier speed-focused runs include some pace suggestions.
To ensure you are working at a proper intensity, this plan includes sessions to help you set your HR zones.
Who created this plan?
Coach Maria Simone is a UESCA certified ultrarunning coach, with over 15 years of experience coaching endurance sport of all types. She is also a USA Triathlon Level 3 certified coach. Her athletic history includes over 20 years of running and trail running. She won Coach Educator of the Year from USA Triathlon, and Coach of the Year from Outspoken women in Triathlon.
