Matthias hat Sport und Mathematik mit dem 2. Staatsexamen abgeschlossen. Er besitzt eine aktuelle Personal Trainer A-Lizenz. Während des Sportstudiums hat Matthias bereits eine A-Lizenz im Schwimmen abgeschlossen. Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Nationaltrainer & Trainer von Einsteigern bis Profiathleten arbeitet er als Dozent für Trainings- und Bewegungswissenschaft und leitet die Trainerausbildung im OCR. 
Als Athlet kann Matthias eine Marathonzeit von 2:20h, Starts in der 1. Triathlon Bundesliga, 4 Deutsche Meistertitel bei den Profis, 2 Europameistertitel und 2 Weltmeistertitel bei den Amateuren vorweisen. Seine Bestzeit auf der Mitteldistanz (1,9-90-21km) liegt bei 3:46h.
